Halloween Scare Trail

On October 27, 2018 by Meredith

Welcome to my stop on the Scare Trail.

Horror – one of my favourite genres, particularly when it comes to movies, though I’m not sure when I really started to appreciate them and be so keen to watch the many good, bad and gory films out there. It makes me laugh because as a kid I couldn’t get past the scene on the moor in An American Werewolf in London, I skipped out on the last half of Aliens, decided I’d rather go strawberry picking with my uncle than stay to watch Critters, and dear God, though not really a horror, Running Man, once the first collar did its thing to that guy’s head, well, I was out of there. So yeah, I’m not sure when I changed my mind about them and what movie it was that did the changing but I absolutely love them.

In terms of picking a favourite, that’s a tough one. I have watched so many different movies- your classic slashers, those with more supernatural elements and spirits, aliens and monsters and crazy big animals, Japanese and other Asian horrors, and then some of the films like Saw or Hostel that love to ramp up the gore. I do, however, have one no-no, or at least it’ll be a one time watch for a film if at the end the killer is the last one standing – it’s more so in the ones where people are hunting people and it annoys me to no end. I watch horror movies for the badass soul survivor, or I’ll accept them taking the bad guy down with them. I don’t mind if there’s a sequel and said survivor bites it in the first five minutes and we follow a new protagonist, so long as the killer gets some sort of beating and comeuppance eventually. Yes, justice, revenge, death so long as one of them is served I’m a happy bunny.

So to actually name a few of my favourites, I’m picking some I enjoy watching over and over. Nothing on TV, want something on in the background, I stick on a horror film. So let’s go with a Top 10 hit repeat horror films:

Wrong Turn (hands off Eliza is mine), The Hills Have Eyes, 2006 (I cheered for that bloody dog!!), The Last House on the Left, 2009 (revenge is sweeeeeet), 28 Days Later (love the soundtrack on this one), I Know what You Did Last Summer (it has Sarah Michelle Geller in it and I am a Buffy ho), Lake Placid (don’t go in the water), Jaws 2 (no really, don’t go in the water), Dog Soldiers (Spoon!), Dawn of the Dead (both versions – own them both, love them both), The Fog (the original, only ever the original).

Okay 10 was actually hard as there are so many more I love to watch again and again. Darn it! *Coughs* The Crazies, Shawn of the Dead, Outlander, House of Wax 2005, Freddy Vs Jason, all the Friday the 13ths, Doom, the rest of the Jaws series (yes ALL of them)… *Coughs* Okay I’ll resist naming even more before you start judging my terrible taste and instead here is the…

Considering I don’t watch that many horror movies… I don’t really have a favorite. I like Fraser’s Mummy though, horror and humor combined (it falls under horror category, right?). I can stomach shorter version of horror-ish tv series though, like Sleepy Hollow, Constantine. I’m just not brave enough to go to a cinema to watch it. 🙂

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 8:40 am - Reply

I don’t know what a proper film buff would say, but The Mummy definitely has horror elements to it *shudders at the thought of scarab beetles scuttling about*. I love that film and is another I’ve watched a fair few times. It’s just a great romp. Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment 🙂

Don’t have any favorite spooky movie or book but I like to watch 90s Are You Afraid of the Dark series, Tremors series, though The Mummy 1-2 by Frazer and Weisz, ect.

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 11:46 am - Reply

I loved Are You Afraid of the Dark! Ah to be a kid again. Thank you for your comment 🙂

Don’t do scary movies but say It as a kid and even if I see the book in the store I have to turn it over if I want to look at the other books.

Another movie I love and have watched plenty of times. Pennywise was pretty creepy with the clown get up. Thank you for taking the time to comment 🙂

There’s is just something about Alfred Hitchcock Psycho. It always make me leave the shower curtain open.

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 11:54 am - Reply

See-through shower doors ftw. Though not sure I’d fare any better whether I could see Norman coming or not lol. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

I am not good with scary movies either. I have watched some and did see some Alfred Hitchcock movies that have stayed with me.

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 2:36 pm - Reply

There are some great Hitchcock films. Great choice. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

I am not a huge fan of scary movies, as they give me nightmares. But I did see Jaws, was scared to swim at the beach for a while after that one.

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 2:40 pm - Reply

Jaws is a great pick and can understand why it’d put people off venturing into the sea. Wouldn’t want anything brushing against my leg after watching that lol. Thank you for commenting 🙂

DRAG ME TO HELL. I forgot to mention this one in another blog. Definitely one of my favourites! The movie is scary from beginning to end, no doubt about it, but the ending scene, where she is literally DRAGGED TO HELL is scary AF! I remember watching the movie again with my brother two days later and yelling BOO! right before the first hand grabbed her. Oh, his reaction, priceless! I laughed so hard I almost peed myself 🙂

My favorite scary movie is House of 1000 Corpses. Everything in this movie could actually happen! It’s so scary!

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 2:45 pm - Reply

Don’t think I’ve seen that one but know of it as I’ve seen The Devil’s Rejects and that’s a sequel or something, right? But yeah, crazy people films are kind of the scariest when you think stuff like that could happen. Thank you for commenting 🙂

  • Janine Cloud October 28, 2018 at 1:23 pm - Reply

The book “It” was great until the very end, and Tim Curry made a suitably horrifying Pennywise but I just can’t forgive Stephen King for that ending.
One of my favorite horror movies is a short done by a friend of mine, an indie filmmaker in Massachusetts, Skip Shea. The film is called Ave Maria, which packs a lot into about 15 minutes or so. You can see the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/99092128. It’s won international horror awards.

The Evil Dead trilogy, but I also love zombies. So Night of the Living Dead (original), 28 days later definitely, and Zombieland.

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 2:55 pm - Reply

Zombies are great, especially fictional ones lol. I do love zombie films and boy I’ve watched some trashy ones. The ones you’ve mentioned were great though. Not sure I’ve seen all of the Evil Dead films. Seen the recent remake and remember seeing one my dad rented when I was a kid. Pretty much only remember Bruce, a book and a house/cabin on a hill… that could be any of them LOL but would guess it’s Army of Darkness based on when that came out. Thank you for commenting 😉

    • Meredith October 28, 2018 at 3:02 pm - Reply

That nearly made it on my attempt at a top 10 list. The first of the films was definitely the best. Thanks for commenting 🙂

I’ve always loved scary movies, but the ones that really scared me are movies like The Exorcist, The Entity, and The Conjuring. They stay with me and make me nervously scurry down my dark hallway between the living room and the bedroom without looking into the shadows.

    • Meredith October 29, 2018 at 9:41 am - Reply

Oh the Conjuring was a good one. Still haven’t gotten around to watching the second film yet. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

As a kid i loved scary movies until i watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Havent been right since then. I tried to watch Paranormal Activity with my husband but then i realized that with my husbanf being in the military i would be home alone at some point and so i watched it behind a pillow. So no scary movies for me.

Not a horror movie fan, especially “murder all the teenagers” types. I had a babysitter as a kid that made us watch My Bloody Valentine and Halloween, and they terrified me.

    • Meredith October 29, 2018 at 10:17 am - Reply

Yeah, seems a little mean. Any babysitting I’ve done ends usually involves some animated movie being watched. Thank you for your comment 🙂

One of my first dates with my ex was to see Poltergeist. Early days of dating I said it was a fine choice. Ugh. I hate horror movies. LOL In retrospect it’s not THAT scary but I’m a wimp. That religious demon/ghost guy? Oh no. But “this house is clean” is still an awesome line to use after doing my chores. LOL And we ended up married with a great daughter so the movie didn’t scare me off too badly. 😉

    • Meredith October 29, 2018 at 11:14 am - Reply

This house is clean… brilliant. A dateto a horror movie, maybe he was hoping for you to hold onto him tightly lol. I watched the remake of Potergeist recently, wasn’t too bad. Thank you for your comment 🙂

The Woman in White. Is that the Lady in White one where the boy is locked in the school and sees the ghost of the little girl who was murdered there? It might not be the same one but that’s a film I saw as a kid and now try and watch any time it’s on TV. Thank you for your comment 🙂

I was going to say I’ve never enjoyed watching horror on screen, though Buffy, Angel, Supernatural, etc., push the line sometimes, when I saw others mentioning The Mummy movie franchise with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Oded Fehr, and of course Arnold Vosloo. Okay, I guess I do sometimes enjoy horror movies, flesh-eating-beetles and all!

    • Meredith October 29, 2018 at 10:25 am - Reply

I am such a Buffy and Angel fan. Yeah, action, comedy, with a hint of the horror side can make for an enjoyable watch. The Frazer, The Mummy film was a blast. Thank you for your comment 🙂

Love Alien 👽 movies. They be scary on a bunch of ways. Plus they usually get bloody.

    • Meredith October 29, 2018 at 10:19 am - Reply

The Alien series is great, as well as some similar sci-fi ones. Stuck on a ship and nowhere to go. Thank you for your comment 🙂

I really don’t like horror or scary movies in general, I reach for the pillow for anything even remotely scary. I remember watching some of the David Tennant Dr Who episodes with my eyes closed half the time!

I’m not a big scary movie person but I’ll admit I have seen most of these on your top ten and can do those. I know What You Did Last Summer was probably the first scary movie I remember ! Thanks for the chance!

Though I’d seen plenty of horrors from renting videos I think IKWYDLS was the first one I saw in the cinema with friends as it was a 15. Can’t remember if I’d seen any others, though was used to telling the odd fib about my age when I went with my dad and brother lol. Thank you for commenting 🙂

I totally forgot Wrong Turn in my other entries. 😱
My favorite Halloween movies tend to be stuff like Hocus Pocus, Halloween town, Dark Shadows, The Addams Family, Hotel Transilvania and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. But I also like movies like Signs, Split, Silence of the lambs, Hannibal, Last House on the Left, When a stranger calls, and The Visit. My favorite one that makes me jump is The Haunting (1999).

How could you forget Wrong Turn! A nice mix of titles. Thank you for your comment 🙂

If I’m going to watch a scary movie, I prefer them to have a bit of comedy in them e.g. Critters, Sharknado, Warm Bodies etc

    • Meredith October 31, 2018 at 8:34 pm - Reply

There are some great horror comedies. Some of my favourites are Shaun of the Dead, Slither, Black Sheep, and Severance. Thanks for the comment 🙂

I’m a total ho for psychological horror, and on that subject, ‘Seven’ and the first version of ‘The Shinning’ are my favourites. I can see them once and again, and I always get creped-out.

    • Meredith October 31, 2018 at 8:30 pm - Reply

Oh Seven is a good one. I do like that movie. And I’m so sorry I saw Shinning rather than Shining and couldn’t help but chuckle remembering The Simpson’s episode lol. Thank you for commenting 🙂

I don’t watch scary movies. The closest I get are the M. Night Shyamalan movies. Even some of those are a bit much for me at times.

    • Meredith October 31, 2018 at 8:29 pm - Reply

Yeah those movies are a bit of a mix as to how scary they are. Thank you for commenting 🙂
